How Electricity Affects Thoughts & Moods

How electricity affects mood tdcs smilingCan zapping your brain with ultra-low current make you HAPPIER? Neuroscientists say YES.

In today’s world, people are constantly on the lookout for that next best thing that will make them feel over the moon, be it a prescribed drug, an illegal one, meditation or a session with a therapist. We’ve all tried it. But, great as these solutions to our emotional well beings might be, they are, after all, temporary and often require quite an effort and time on our part.

Can we just skip the middleman and get to the happiness straight away?

Well, neuroscientists think yes! And they have the research to back it up!

A future of your emotional well being might depend on something called tDCS or transcranial direct current stimulation. Used as a potential means to address neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, transcranial direct current stimulation is just that, stimulation of the brain through a low-level direct current. Basically, zapping your brain! You read it right! But I’d have to stop you here before you go on with the idea of electroshocks and twitching.

tDCS is a VERY LOW-LEVEL direct current, it means 0.5–2 mA, which studies show does not cause damage to either your brain or your skull!

So how does it work?

First of all, you’ll need TheBrainDriver, a small tDCS device equipped with a 9 volt battery and 2 electrodes, anode and cathode https://TheBrainDriver.com. You place these electrodes on different places on your head, or shoulder (here’s a detailed article about electrode placements, i.e. montages: https://TheBrainDriver.com/Brain%20Stimulation%20montages.htm#electrode_positioning_studies depending on what you want to achieve.

The study (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/769494) where the left DLPFC, or dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was stimulated in order to help patients with their depression showed that 48% of participants responded well to treatment. They received tDCS every weekday, 30 treatments in total. Some of them even noted a better working memory and verbal fluency. If tDCS had this effect on patients suffering from depression, just think what this type of technology might do for healthy individuals using TheBrainDriver?

tDCS - how it works?

The idea behind tDCS is that direct current stimulates the neuronal membrane, thus affecting the synapses, or pathways used to transmit information. Using low-current on a regular basis directly changes our neuronal excitability (yes, even our neurons get ‘excited’), the thing that produces our behavior and cognition. And it does it all with a lasting effect!

Provided that it has been used according to the instructions, TheBrainDriver tDCS might just be the key to turning your frown upside-down!
